Lecture Content

I. Sociology as a Science

Sociology uses systematic methods to gather and analyze evidence about the social world. The scientific method in sociology follows a series of interconnected steps: identifying a research question or problem, reviewing existing literature on the topic, formulating a hypothesis or research question, selecting a research design and method, collecting data, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions and reporting findings.

Several key terms are essential for understanding sociological research. A variable is any measurable trait or characteristic that can change. The independent variable is the presumed cause -- the variable that is manipulated or observed for its effect -- while the dependent variable is the presumed effect, the variable that changes in response to the independent variable. A hypothesis is a testable statement about the relationship between two or more variables. Correlation refers to a relationship in which two or more variables change together, while causation refers to a relationship in which one variable directly causes a change in another. It is essential to remember that correlation does not imply causation; a spurious correlation is an apparent relationship caused by a third variable. Finally, operationalization is the process of defining abstract concepts in measurable terms, such as operationalizing "social class" as annual household income.

II. Quantitative vs. Qualitative Research

Quantitative research collects numerical data that can be statistically analyzed. It aims for objectivity, generalizability, and replicability, and its methods include surveys, experiments, and analysis of existing statistics. Its strengths lie in large sample sizes, statistical precision, and comparability, though it may miss depth, nuance, and subjective meaning.

Qualitative research collects non-numerical data such as words, images, and observations. It aims for depth of understanding, rich description, and interpretation, employing methods such as interviews, ethnography, participant observation, and content analysis. Its strengths are in capturing complexity, meaning, and context, though it faces limitations including smaller sample sizes, difficulty generalizing, and potential researcher bias. Many sociologists employ mixed methods, combining both approaches to leverage their respective strengths and compensate for their limitations.

III. Major Research Methods

Surveys collect standardized data from a sample of respondents using questionnaires or interviews, and they can be administered in person, by phone, by mail, or online. Central to survey research are several key concepts: the population is the entire group the researcher wants to study; a sample is a subset of the population actually studied; a random sample ensures that every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected; and sampling bias occurs when the sample does not accurately represent the population. Surveys are efficient for large populations, standardized, and quantifiable, but they may suffer from low response rates, social desirability bias, and an inability to establish causation. The General Social Survey (GSS), conducted since 1972, is one of the most important ongoing survey research projects in sociology.

Experiments involve the researcher manipulating an independent variable and measuring the effect on a dependent variable. Key features include the experimental group (which receives the treatment or manipulation), the control group (which does not receive the treatment and serves as a baseline for comparison), and random assignment (participants are randomly placed into experimental or control groups). The Hawthorne effect is a well-known complication in which subjects change behavior because they know they are being observed. Experiments are the best method for establishing causation and have high internal validity, but they are limited by artificial settings, ethical constraints, and difficulties generalizing to real-world conditions.

Field research and ethnography involve the researcher directly observing and often participating in the social setting being studied. In participant observation, the researcher joins the group and participates in its activities. This approach requires immersion in a natural setting over an extended period, detailed field notes, and building rapport and trust with subjects. Ethnography produces rich, detailed, and contextualized understanding that captures lived experience, but it is time-consuming, difficult to generalize from, and susceptible to researcher bias and the problem of "going native."

Secondary and existing data analysis involves analyzing data that has already been collected by others, drawn from sources such as census data, government statistics, historical records, and organizational data. Content analysis, a systematic examination of cultural artifacts such as texts, media, and documents, falls into this category as well. This approach is cost-effective and allows for the study of historical trends using large datasets, though the data may not perfectly fit the research question and may have quality issues.

IV. Reliability, Validity, and Generalizability

Reliability is the consistency of a measure. A reliable measure produces the same results when repeated under the same conditions. Test-retest reliability refers to consistent results over time, while inter-rater reliability refers to consistent results across different observers.

Validity is the accuracy of a measure -- whether it actually captures what it claims to measure. Face validity means the measure appears to measure what it should. Construct validity means the measure accurately captures the theoretical concept. Internal validity refers to confidence that the independent variable caused the observed effect, while external validity refers to the extent to which findings can be generalized beyond the study.

Generalizability is whether findings from a sample can be applied to a larger population. It depends on the sampling method, sample size, and study design. Random sampling is the most reliable method for increasing generalizability.

V. Ethics in Sociological Research

All research involving human subjects must follow ethical guidelines. The core ethical principles include informed consent (participants must be told the nature of the research and voluntarily agree to participate), no harm (researchers must not cause physical, psychological, or social harm to participants), confidentiality and anonymity (protecting the identities and data of participants), and debriefing (informing participants of the true nature of the study after it concludes, especially if deception was used). Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are committees that review research proposals to ensure ethical standards are met.

The history of sociological research includes several notorious ethical violations. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study (1932-1972) involved African American men with syphilis who were deliberately left untreated without their knowledge. Milgram's Obedience Experiments (1961) deceived participants into believing they were administering painful electric shocks. The Stanford Prison Experiment (1971) assigned participants to guard roles, and some became abusive, forcing the study to be terminated early. Laud Humphreys' Tearoom Trade (1970) involved covert observation in public restrooms without consent. These cases led directly to the development of modern research ethics standards.

An ongoing debate in sociology concerns value neutrality versus engaged sociology. Weber advocated for value-free sociology, arguing that objectivity in research is essential. Others argue that all research is shaped by values and that sociologists have a responsibility to address injustice. Whether sociology can be truly objective remains a contested question within the discipline.

VI. Reading and Evaluating Sociological Research

When evaluating research, it is important to consider who conducted the study and who funded it, what methods were used and whether they were appropriate, how large and representative the sample was, whether the conclusions are supported by the data, whether the findings have been replicated, and what limitations the researchers themselves acknowledge.

Media reports of research often oversimplify or distort findings. Whenever possible, it is best to seek the original source, and readers should be skeptical of causal claims based on correlational data.
