Case Presentation

A 27-year-old female internal medicine PGY-2 resident is interested in academic medicine with focus on medical education but has no research experience and feels lost about how to build an academic career. At the advice of her chief resident, she systematically identifies her needs: (1) understanding academic career paths, (2) developing educational research skills, (3) building a CV with scholarly work, and (4) navigating fellowship and job applications. She observes faculty in her program and identifies a hospitalist-educator who publishes regularly in education journals and seems to enjoy her work. She requests a meeting and directly asks if the faculty member would be willing to mentor her. The mentor agrees and they establish regular monthly meetings with specific agendas. The mentor helps her: join a medical education research team as a collaborator, develop a quality improvement project suitable for presentation and publication, connect with the medical education fellowship director, and review her CV and personal statement for fellowship applications. The resident prepares for each meeting, follows through on agreed actions, remains receptive to constructive feedback, and expresses gratitude for the mentor's investment. By PGY-3, she has two poster presentations, a published case report, and a strong fellowship application. She matches into her top-choice medical education fellowship. She commits to becoming a mentor herself to pay forward what she received.
